Loanhead Air Cadets Raise £740 for Maggie's
Local teenagers from Loanhead Squadron Air Cadets recently held a fundraising Disco in the Pentland Roadhouse to raise money for Maggie's Centre in Memory of their Commanding Officer Flt Lt Liz Hay who sadly passed away from Cancer a few weeks ago.
The disco was well attended by cadets, staff and parents from across the entire Edinburgh and South Scotland Wing with some travelling as from as far as Denny! A raffle and waxing took place on the night along with an ad hoc auction and a good time was had by all.
To add to the money raised from the Disco the cadets and staff from Loanhead spent the run up to Christmas and New Year bag packing at Morrisons on Ferry Road which brought the total to £740 which was handed over at the Squadron HQ in Burghlee Terrace, Loanhead.
Maggie's Centre made it possible for Liz's daughter to bring her wedding forward a month and converted the patients room in Ward 2 of the Western general to allow Carol and Ian's wedding to go ahead and for Liz to see it all as well as making a brilliant speech. Sadly as soon as the wedding was over Liz fell asleep and never woke up as she passed away 2 days later. Senior Cadets and staff visited Liz as she slept and read a touching card out to her which had messages from all her Cadets, the card in itself shows how much she meant to the entire Squadron as both a CO and a friend to all.
Liz will be sorely missed by all at 2466 (Loanhead) her kind nature combined with her knowledge of the Air cadet Organisation ensured the continuation of our Sqn.The staff and cadets will now make sure her hard work wasn't for nothing. Loanhead has had a new Commanding Officer in Flt Lt Lou Cromie, Galashiels, and along with the SNCO's Sgt (ATC) Libby Paton and Sgt (ATC) Vicki Craik, Both of Loanhead they hope to have a full and exciting schedule of events in 2010 allowing the cadets to gain skills and experiences they would not get anywhere else cumulating with a two week expedition to Nepal in 2011 to carry out Voluntary work in one of the worlds most needy areas.
One year... at band camp....
Cdt Cpl Grant Cowe (14) from Tyninghame recently attended a Marching Band Camp in Hamprshire with members of ATC from all over UK. He was the only one from Edinburgh and South Scotland Wing, which made his participation all the more commendable because he knew no-one else when he went. He qualified to go because he is already a piper with the North Berwick Pipe Band. As a result, not only has he widened his social network considerably, but gained his piping badge and was deemed by his camp tutor to be talented enough to start a chanter group at his cadet unit, 297 (North Berwick) Detached Flight, ATC, which will commence at the start of the new term. This demonstration of initiative will count towards his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award.

I have been in the Air Cadets for about a year. So far it has been one of the best things I have ever done. I was asked to play in a concert in Gosport, Portsmouth and earned a special Bag-piping Badge.
To earn my badge I had to do a large performance with over 100 other Air Cadets in front of H.M.S. Victory at Gosport Naval Station. The badge that I earned is a Corps Level Piper Badge.
The performance has inspired me to create our own Sector Marching Band. At the moment we are looking for Tenor and Snare drummers in our Sector.
Playing in front of H.M.S. Victory was really an amazing thing to be able to do and is “a once in a lifetime” experience. I had a great time at the camp and made lots of friends who I am not likely to forgot.

American Director Shoots 297 DF Cadets

Recently, cadets from 297DF took part in filming at the Museum of Flight. It was all arranged at very short notice and took quite some flurry of activity to get all relevant permission in place from WHQ, parents and MoF! The purpose of the film was to advertise an art competition for secondary school pupils aged between 12 and 14, instigated by art teacher, David Grigor, of Berwickshire High School.
Last year, David won a trip to Huntsville Space Academy in the USA, where he and other winners (all teachers) underwent a course of training. He emerged as overall leader and the 'prize' (more of a challenge, really) was to set up events to select a young person to travel to the Space Academy next summer on a scholarship basis. He has chosen to do this through an art competition and to publicise it, he is making a short film to put on his website. Hence the involvement of our cadets.
The film, which was shot by a professional film director from America, features seven of our cadets: Cpls Hitchen, Finlayson and Crowe, Cdts Keatinge, Gouvea and Cunningham. It involved them posing in front of some of the exhibits, exclaiming the excitement of space travel and performing appropriate choreographed actions: a totally unique way of spending a bleak winter afternoon! The film is currently in the process of being edited and will be run past Wing staff and parents before release.
If you are interested in participating, your school art department should have details, if not already, then very soon in the new year. The art work can be in any medium and the subject will be the artist's own choice. Entries will be submitted in the first instance in the form of digital photos, and then the finalists would submit their original work for final judging - so bear that in mind before you create a 10 m high model rocket or space station! The winner would be sent to Huntsville accompanied by an adult.
We don't have details of the website yet, but it is likely to be restricted to schools.

UK Youth Build-a-Plane Project
Seven Air Cadets from 297 (North Berwick) DF ATC were among those from the North Berwick area who had a 20-minute Air Passenger Flight in a light aircraft recently, thanks to generous sponsorship from North Berwick Round Table, to the tune of £800.
The UK Youth Build-a-Plane Project is the brainchild of Captain Stewart Luck, who is not only a 747 pilot but also a flying instructor. He brought the plane –a RANS S6 Coyote fixed wing microlight – in its specially converted bus, from its base near Stansted to East Fortune Microlight Club, courtesy of Gordon and Jill Douglas, proprietors of the club.
Air cadets from 297 (Musselburgh) Sqn built the starboard wing of the plane in 2003 with guidance from the East of Scotland Strut of the Light Aircraft Association. The port wing was built in Wales, the tail section in Northern Ireland and the fuselage, engine and landing gear finally assembled near Manchester. It was the first to be built under the scheme: Build-a-Plane 4 is about to be started in the south of England. More information about the project can be found online.
The plane is staying in the area for the next two weeks to allow more young people the opportunity to fly with Strut pilots Gavin Hunter and Robin Johnston. It will be on show at the East Fortune Airshow on Saturday 25 July, at the Strut’s exhibition space.
